ARTS AND SCIENCE COMPETITIONS
A Baronial Brew
To those skilled in the arts of brewing: the incoming Baron and Baroness challenge you to create your best period or take on period drink and present it to them by June 15. The winner will be asked and remunerated to produce batches of the winning drink to be given out as largesse. Documentation is required.
The Baroness' Subtlety Challenge
The medieval art form know as subtlety, also called soteltie, was often created using food, sugar, marzipan, wax, or some other more orthodox material. Subtleties were not always edible, as they might be composed of wax or plaster. They may have been constructed by molded or poured sugar, formed sugar around a base using sugar paste or carved from blocks of sugar. Often ushered into a meal with great fanfare and presentation, subtleties offered entertainment and conversation between the courses.
For this challenge, participants are asked to create a period subtlety. Please no cake or other obvious modern materials. Documentation is encouraged, but not required. The theme of the challenge, is All Hail Bhakail, in honor of our new Baron and Baroness.
- It may be edible or not. Edible entries must include an ingredient list. In-edible entries must be clearly marked that they should not be eaten.
- Entries should not be larger than 2 x 2 x 2 feet.
- Participants are responsible for the removal of their entry at the end of feast.
- All entries should be presented to Her Excellency at High Table before the feast for final presentations.
- Entries will be judged by a panel of Baronesses.
- A token will be awarded by each of the Participating Baronesses for the entry that strikes their fancy.
- A final award, the ability to create our Yule subtlety, will be made by the new Baroness of Bhakail.
Baroness Alesone will be holding a couple of subtlety classes at the Tuesday night Canton Social. She will be going over the basics of period subtleties and be on hand to answer any questions. You can also email her at alesone.gray @ gmail.com
