Barony of Bhakail Business Meeting: Jan 2023 Officer Reports

Following are the monthly officer reports submitted for the Bhakail monthly business meeting of Jan 10, 2023.

Meeting agenda: https://bhakail.eastkingdom.org/wordpress/index.php/2023/01/04/january-business-meeting-agenda/

Coronet’s Report – Baron Muin maqq Minain

Hellooooooooooo the Peoples of the Barony, Our neighbors and Our Allies;

We of Bhakail must rejoice, for Our Tavern event even now meanders ever closer, that Joyous Wreath of Holiday Cheers that sets boldly upon Our Barony’s Hearth; We will need Our People ready for the Bardic and Gaming Championships to choose Our newest Champions who would represent Bhakail in this coming year.

The Baronry is also currently in need of more scroll holders, if anyone either has spares lying about, or is willing to construct them, We would appreciate these efforts greatly.

As We approach the beginning of what COULD be Our Final Year as Baron of this amazing Barony of Bhakail, I would like to take this time to remind the Barony that the SCA draws each of Us to its welcoming arms with a variety of activities and interests. With upcoming Events, such as Waking of the Salamander, if you are thinking of aiding in the running of the event, yet do not know what to do nor where to start, think of those things you enjoy doing in the Society, and start with those things. Or, ask… you could always ask. Yeah. Ask.

This year is fast coming to a close, and We should all be thankful for the turning of the Seasons that will bring back the Sun, and leave this past year where it belongs, in memories, and lessons well learned.

In closing: Let us think now upon the Poetry of those Ancient Ghlaswegeon Peoples, with words by their most honored and noteworthy of encroonenator, Wee Jock MacJock of the revered line of the MacJocks, sometimes known as the Jock, to the Caledorii Mnathan nan Buadhan So-rèiteachaidh Let these words whisk you away to a time e’er now long gone. Let its inspiration give your soul wings!

Am bu chòir dearmad a dhèanamh air an neach-eòlais
Agus nach deach a thoirt gu inntinn?
Am bu chòir dearmad a dhèanamh air an neach-eòlais
Agus làithean na h-aingidheachd ?
Airson auld lang syne, a ghràidh
Airson auld lang syne
Is òlaidh sinn cupan caoimhneis fòs
Air son auld lang syne
Agus gu cinnteach ceannaichidh tu do chupa
Agus gu cinnteach ceannaichidh mi mo chuid!
Gabhaidh sinn cupan caoimhneis fathast
Air son auld lang syne
Tha sinn le chèile air pleadhadh anns an t-sruth
O ghrian maidne gu oidhche
Na cuantan eadar sinn a Thighearna agus at
Bho làithean auld lang syne
Do sheann luchd-eòlais na dìochuimhnich
Agus cha deach a thoirt gu inntinn a-riamh
Bu chòir dearmad a dhèanamh air seann neach-eòlais
Air son auld lang syne ?
Do sheann luchd-eòlais na dìochuimhnich
Agus cha deach a thoirt gu inntinn a-riamh
Bu chòir dearmad a dhèanamh air seann neach-eòlais
Ann an làithibh auldlang syne ?

Is òlaidh sinn cupan caoimhneis fòs

Be well,

And Peace be upon you in these Slowly Enlightening Times;

Muin,

Baron of Bhakail

Seneschal’s Report – Máistir Mael Eoin mac Echuidh

Happy New Year!

I’ve already missed my own mark of being more prepared on this month’s change in business meeting planning, communication and execution…but the holidays were maybe the worst time of year (…well, maybe aside from Pennsic) to launch something new.  My bad.  Thankfully, we’re not being graded on it and we’ll give it a good chance before deciding whether to stick with it or change it.

We’ve had a lot of good feedback on the Yule survey, and I think between that and the desire to pin down a place on a site’s calendar before they fill up, we should plan on using the German Society again for Yule ‘23.  I had a lot of hope for Lulu Temple, especially with expanded space for activities, but the significantly increased cost coupled with a loss of ambiance really worked against it.  More to come on future Yule plans, but the long and short of it is that without legwork being done to find new sites, there’s a lot to recommend staying where we are.  If anyone is interested in helping with finding new sites, let me know.  Myself and the other officers aren’t able to do it at this time and we need more volunteers.  Likewise, if anyone wants to bid to run Yule this year (or any year going forward!), please reach out.

Social Media Deputy – Magister Rowen Cloteworthy

Eleven new folks have joined the Barony’s FB group this month. We had a combination of new folks, a couple people from other groups, and a couple returning SCAdians recently moved into the Barony. All the newcomers were given introductions to Baron Muin and Lady Chana. Information-wise, we’ve posted contact info about the Baronial email list and the Kingdom’s Discord server. Photos from Yule were shared and information about the coming Gaming and Bardic Champs at Tavern was distributed, along with other bits and bobs. Until next time…

Salamander Pursuivant’s Report – Lady Ragna Grímólfsdóttir

No report.

Knight Marshal – Lady Motte Nachtfalter

Practices are expected to continue indoors at the locations listed from December’s report (Ultimate Archery, 120 E Kings Hwy Suite 404, Maple Shade NJ 08052, OR Lonnie Young Recreation Center, 1100 E Chelten Avenue, Philadelphia PA 19138. Site location will alternate weekly, with updates communicated to the fighting Facebook groups.)

Practices continue to be held, with Sir Bari or Sir Elglin acting as marshals or other suitable individuals as needed.

Rapier Marshal – Don Melchior Kriebel

We finally heard back from our new landlords….and he promptly kicked us out of the church basement. In theory it is so the needed repairs can be started but while he says he is open to us using the site in the future the impression I get is that he wants a lot more money for the site once repairs are done.

We have collected our loaner gear and will store it until we have a new place for it.

We are working under the assumption that future use of the space will be too costly for the benefits and are looking to get a new space. Several folks have been contacted to see what we can get.

December 2022 Business Meeting Minutes and Officer Reports

Barony of Bhakail Meeting: December 13, 2022

Old Business

PAX Unplugged

Report from Lady Chana Freidl the Maker: PAX Unplugged was a HUGE success!  We had so much more interest than last year, from people across the country.  Having fighters really attracted a lot of attention, and enough SCAdians were there in the “audience” that we could all talk to the crowd about what they were watching.  I have big plans for next year, and I hope the leads we got this year join us!  I owe a GIGANTIC thank you to everyone who helped out, I couldn’t have done it without you!

Shire Wars

Planning is beginning, and the organizers would like a representative from the Barony. Next month’s meeting is on the last Tuesday of the month; please contact Mael Eoin if you are interested in volunteering.

Yule

Happened on Saturday, and was a success.

Tavern

Planning is underway.

Waking of the Salamander

A bid has been submitted and is currently under review.

Yule 2023

Several people visited Lulu Temple to check it out as a site location. It is relatively expensive, so Bhakail will be looking to other nearby groups with which to partner. No bids have been submitted yet, so if you are interested in running Yule 2023 reach out to Mael Eoin. Need to think of strategies to keep people to stay and help with cleaning. Contact Philadelphia if you have ideas on alternative sites!

Officer Positions

  • Chatelaine: Term ends in December. Chana has indicated her willingness to continue. A vote was held and Chana was reelected.
  • Webminister: Finnolfr Hrafnson submitted his willingness to take on the position. A vote was held and Finn was elected.
  • Emergency Seneschal: Taichleach Eoghanacht expressed willingness for the position. It is an appointed position and Mael Eoin appointed Taichleach to the position.

Officer Reports

Coronet’s Report – Baron Muin maqq Minain

Seneschal’s Report – Máistir Mael Eoin mac Echuidh

Greetings to the Barony!

We’ve had a very busy month, between Yule and PAX Unplugged, not to mention all of the regular weekly activities throughout the Barony.  As we hit the holidays and the end of the year, I hope things are easy, relaxing and energizing for us all.  The past three years have been very difficult – unprecedented in our lifetimes – and while we’re not back to every routine, activity and other opportunities that might have been regular in years past, we’re resuming some activities and forging ahead with other new ones.

As an officer and Peer, I am looking forward to supporting the events and activities that we are planning and would encourage anyone with interest in helping out to reach out to myself or any other organizer. Whether it’s to help staff an event, learn how to run events or head up kitchens or look into a Baronial office as an assistant, either to help in the role or with an eye to taking it on fully at some point.

Specifically as Seneschal, my deputy Taichleach and I will start meeting regularly to review the Baronial customs (“bylaws”, though we aren’t to call them that) and propose an updated version that reflects how the Barony operates today, especially where our practices are at odds with what we’ve previously adopted. Likewise, we encourage all officers to consider their own existing policies (and/or create new ones if none exist).

On a personal note, I’d like to say I was grateful for the Yule we had and the massive demo effort of PAX Unplugged.  There’s a lot of opportunity, there, but like many things, it would benefit from more volunteers, whether to staff the booth on occasion throughout the weekend, help make games or the like to give away or help with activities like dancing, fencing and the heavy combat that debuted this year.

I wish things were such that we could’ve seen one another, if we didn’t have the opportunity, and I appreciate the chance to see as many folks as I have through our practices and events this year.  Figuring out individual balances and accommodations we need to make to keep doing what we do is a challenge and I expect this next year will be no different there.

Stay warm and safe and however you celebrate this time of year, may it be filled with light and laughter.

Mael Eoin

Social Media Deputy – Magister Rowen Cloteworthy

This month saw seven new people join our FB page. Several who are members in other groups, one a SCAdian recently returned to live in the Barony, and a couple newcomers. As always, much information has been shared. This month there were communications on Pax, Yule, how to subscribe to the Baronial email list, information on the Kingdom’s Discord server, information for beginning scribes, and information from our Seneschal on how he’ll be restructuring the meetings and reporting requirements. As always, information is passed back and forth between the email list and social media. Until next time,

Salamander Pursuivant’s Report – Lady Ragna Grímólfsdóttir

No report.

Knight Marshal – Lady Motte Nachtfalter

Fighter practice continues into the cold months. In a burst of ingenuity and generosity, our Tuesday practices are moving indoors to alternating sites.

12/06 & 12/20
Practice will be held at:
Ultimate Archery
120 E Kings Hwy Suite 404,
Maple Shade, NJ 08052

These accommodations were made courtesy of Sterling del Rosa and are not to be misconstrued as an “unlawful occupation” of Bhakail forces outside the Barony. Attendees are asked to donate $5 toward site cost.

12/13 & 12/27
Practice will be held at:
Lonnie Young Recreation Center
1100 E Chelten Avenue
Philadelphia, PA 19138

These accommodations are made courtesy of Osa N’Kante and we are thrilled for his assistance and participation.

Site location will alternate weekly, with updates communicated to the fighting Facebook groups.

Preparations for war continue apace.
New business request: Could I get access to the Bhakail KM email address and it’s backlog? Just in case new folks are reaching out and I’m not aware. Thanks!

Rapier Marshal – Don Melchior Kriebel

Bhakail rapier practice continues to be held at the Mayfair Presbyterian Church in NorthEast Philadelphia. Attendance is moderate and we have had a couple of new people checking out the practice this month. There were no incidents.

We have sent the email to the new building owners a second time and there has still been no response. We have been told they are slow to respond.

Archery Marshal – Lady Maryna Borowska

No report.

Thrown Weapons Marshal – The Honorable Lord Mikael melrakki

Thrown weapons and archery practices are on hiatus, until Spring.  If a long period of unseasonably warm weather occurs, an impromptu practice may occur.

Minister of the List – The Honorable Lord Mikael melrakki

Nothing to report

Exchequer – Mistress Philadelphia Brown

As you probably know, the Baronial Council of the Exchequer (aka the Baronial Financial Committee) manages the Barony’s assets (cash and non-cash), approves budgets for events and other expenditures, and is responsible for the Baronial Financial Policies.

The Baronial Council of the Exchequer is made up of five OR seven voting members:

  • Chancellor of the Exchequer,
  • Seneschal,
  • Coronet (one vote whether a single Coronet or two Coronets), and
  • two at-large members OR four at-large members.

The Deputy Seneschal and the Deputy Chancellor of the Exchequer are kept informed of the Council of Exchequer discussions, but they do not have a vote on CoE issues.

The four current at-large members of the Council of the Exchequer have each served longer than their standard terms. and it is time to give them many, many thanks for all their years of service and let them enjoy a well-earned respite. Vivant, Mistress Judith the Confused, Mistress Gisela Szabo, Doña Damiana Almodóvar de Sevilla, and Lady Livia Petralia!

If you are interested in being an at-large member of Bhakail’s Council of the Exchequer, you must be at least 18 years old and a paid SCA member. If you have any questions about the duties of the CoE or interest in becoming one of the new at-large members, please contact me (exchequer@bhakail.eastkingdom.org)  before the January Barony Meeting, if possible.

Thanks very much!

Chamberlain – Honorable Lord Bryan Mac Dhunghaill an Boghadair

Historian – Honorable Lord Bryan Mac Dhunghaill an Boghadair

Had a good Yule, talked to a lot of people and got some help with recreating the electronic history from Beck of Copeland. Scanning has begun. Chana has offered me pictures, I want to start putting together a slide show for the 50th calibration. So I am going to ask for pictures and stories again. His Excellency Buckland’s Crossing said he would send me the documentation about the formation of Buckland’s Cross. I don’t know what event I will be going to in the near future.

Minister of Arts & Sciences – Lady Scolastica Capellaria

This past weekend at our Yule Celebration a New A&S champion was crowned: Katrein Topffer for her illuminated playing cards. Aiden Underhill won the brewing competition with his red currant liqueur and Caudle. Stay tuned for future announcements of next year’s themes! Both competitions were well attended with many Bhakailis showing of their stuff including embroidery, pottery, leatherwork, lacemaking as well as many delicious beverages!

Don’t forget about our Bardic and Gaming championships on January 28th in Philadelphia!

There was discussion about moving forward and signing a contract to secure the site in advance of submission of an event bid if the visit goes well, and no concerns were expressed.

Officer Reports

Coronet’s Report – Baron Muin maqq Minain

Hello the Peoples of the Barony, Our neighbors and Our Allies;

We of Bhakail must rejoice, for Our Yule event is trundling ever closer, that Joyous Garland of Holiday CHeers that sets boldly upon Our Barony’s Hearth; We will need Our People ready for the A&S and Brewing Championships to choose Our newest Champions who would represent Bhakail in the coming year.

Also are called for those who would hear the call to Service, and aid in producing these festivities, please be aware we will be hosting the Royals this Yule, and we will need All Salamandry Hands on the metaphorical Deck.

DEMOS! We have a possible demo coming down the pike, in the form of PAX-Unplugged, and if you want to show off for the public, and possibly recruit new members from amongst the public, please let the Seneschal know of your wish to participate. Get Paxxinated against the Winter doldrums, and join Us at this Wonderful, and Game-filled event!

We look forward to the Post New Year Revels that are “TAVERN!” And the contests inherent in that day, as well.

The Baronry is also currently in need of more scroll holders, if anyone either has spares lying about, or is willing to construct them.

As we approach the beginning of what could be Our Final Year as Baron of Bhakail, I would like to take this time to ask if the Baron would hold a vote, and ascertain whether it would like this to BE my final year. Or if it will allow me to Serve the Barony for one more year. As is Our Custom, We leave this weighty matter up to the People of Bhakail, and Its Officers.

In closing: Let us harken now to the Wise, and Winsome Poetry of Ancient Galacianii Peoples, with words by their most honored and noteworthy of wordynessmen, Gascargana the Adle-Eared, sometimes known as the Connie, to his Roman buddies! Let these words whisk you away to a time e’er now long gone. Let its inspiration give your soul wings!

Contra a porta inclínase e comeza unha escena
E as súas bágoas caen e arden no verde do xardín

E así castelos feitos de area
Caer no mar
Finalmente

Be well,
And Peace be upon you in these Dark Times;

Muin,
Baron of Bhakail

Seneschal’s Report – Máistir Mael Eoin mac Echuidh

We’re still tracking to have a good Yule event, and have noticed TRH are intending to attend as well.  How this will play out with the Baronial/Royal Room is being worked on, but it means the day will be all the more epic having Their Majesties and Their Highnesses in attendance 🙂

Tavern is being planned and we should see some more about that coming soon.

For Yule 2023, we have some exciting news, though we’ll still need a bid for anything to go forward.  After discussing with the impending Barony of Hartshorn-dale, we’re looking forward to returning to the Lulu Temple site that they and we have both used in the past.  All of the parking woes we deal with at the German Society will be no more, and the kitchen is significantly better in numerous ways.  Consider this the official solicitation for bids for Yule 2023…and the sooner we can start planning, the better 🙂  We will have some additional requirements if anyone is interested, so please get in touch with His Excellency and myself if you are considering putting in a bid so that we can discuss specifics.

Finally, we have some updates around COVID policies:

https://seneschal.eastkingdom.org/new-kingdom-wide-variance-effective-11-11-2022/

This change is in effect until March 1st, 2023.

What this means for Yule or any other event, we have to see closer to the event for specifics, but the thing to note about the CDC metric being used is it is specifically using the “Community levels” map/metric, not “Community transmission” or any of the other metrics.

If we were to hold Yule this weekend, we would be at a “Medium” level for “Community levels” and could not require masking:

“Transmission levels” at the moment for Philadelphia County, however, are “Substantial”:

We’ll keep monitoring the situation as we get closer and will act as the variance allows, but this is what Society has approved for our use at this time.

Stay warm and safe, and hopefully we’ll see one another soon, as and how we can.

Social Media Deputy – Magister Rowen Cloteworthy

Activity-wise, lots of posts with important info. The Heirs to the Tyger thrones, the trip to the Met, announcements about Yule, an A&S course the Honorable Lady Scolastica was teaching, and much more! Until next time…

Minister of the List – The Honorable Lord Mikael melrakki

Nothing to report.

Exchequer – Mistress Philadelphia Brown

Slooowwwly showing my wonderful new Deputy the ropes. I haven’t scared her off yet, AND she’s been very patient with how long it’s taking me to work on this transition.

Hard to believe that Pax demo, Yule Revel, and year-end report are all just around the corner! If anyone needs reimbursements, please let me know.

For Yule Revel, the additional insurance and the outside cleaning company (for cleaning the floors, primarily) have been set up, just like last year.

Chamberlain – Honorable Lord Bryan Mac Dhunghaill an Boghadair

Nothing to report.

Chronicler – Lady Ellyn Grene

Currently working to gather content for the November issue of the Salamander. Please contact me by Nov 21 if you have something you would like to contribute!

Historian – Honorable Lord Bryan Mac Dhunghaill an Boghadair

Minister of Arts & Sciences – Lady Scolastica Capellaria

This past month I taught a class over zoom examining strategies to navigate Museum Databases. I give a huge thanks to Margarette la Gantière for leading the trip to the Met in my stead.

There are A&S opportunities at several local upcoming events including 100 Minutes War/EK Novice day (November 19th in Sparta NJ). Bhakail’s Yule (Dec 10 in Philadelphia) will have our brewing competition, A&S competition and Athena’s Thimble Panel/Solar as well as singing and dancing. Owlsherst’s Twelfth Night event (January 7 in York PA) will boast games, bardic and dancing. Please see the east kingdom event announcements for details.

If you are interested in teaching classes on just about anything, there is a call for classes for Nova Schola in Hartshorn Dale on March 4, 2023 in Collegeville PA. Please contact Alison Wodehalle 148153@members.eastkingdom.org.

March 4, 2023 is also the date of the Kingdom A&S competition! This year in Laval Quebec! Registration opens December 1. This year’s competition will again be a hybrid format of online displays and in person competition. For more information please read about it on the Kingdom MOAS website: https://moas.eastkingdom.org/displays-competitions/crowns-as-champions/

If you have any A&S interests that you would like to explore, need help researching something, or are looking for resources feel free to email me at MOAS@bhakail.eastkingdom.org. I also would love to see what you are working on! Please send me pictures of your projects!

As a reminder here are the prompts for our Yule A&S competitions!

Baronial A&S Competition Theme chosen by our current Champion Svana Vefari:

This year’s competition will focus around “Growth”. As artists, we find ourselves on an ever-changing and challenging journey while pursuing our particular area of A&S study. We would love to see how artisans have grown from where they began to where they are now. What have you learned? What “Ah-HAH!” moments did you experience? What explorations helped you refine your art and overcome trials? For those of you who are just starting out in your A&S journey, no worries. Please explain what you have learned so far and what goals you are working towards. Actual documentation for entries is highly encouraged and needs only be brief with a few sources. We look forward to seeing your entries and learning more about your Arts and Science journey. Please feel free to PM me or email me (Lindsay.nery@yahoo.com) with any questions or concerns!

Baronial Brewing Competition Theme chosen by our current Champion Siobhan the Harper:

This year’s Theme is Something to Keep Us Warm:

Any category beverage (beer, wine, mead, cordial, other) that will keep us all warm and cozy. Points awarded for taste and historical inspiration. So bring your best spiced mead or hyppocras, mulled wine, good hearty beer to enjoy by the fire, Wassail (using the brewer’s product), cordials, etc. As always, a full ingredient list is mandatory. Documentation is encouraged, but not required. Questions may be directed to Siobhan the Harper.

Chatelaine – Lady Chana Freidl the Maker

Our newcomers continue participating online, at weekly socials, and are looking forward to future events like Yule and Tavern!

Chancellor Minor’s – vacant

Webminister – Máistir Mael Eoin mac Echuidh

Three of us gathered online, recently, to discuss the office of Webminister and my intent to hand it off.  We had a good time with ideas and enthusiasm flowing, and I am announcing that as of this meeting, the position is open for candidates, with Finn offering to step up. He and Ellyn will be collaborating on content in general between their offices, which was a great outcome to see.

If no other candidates are forthcoming between now and December, we’ll hold an operational vote next month, otherwise we’ll plan a formal polling.

Looking forward to new perspectives and energy being brought to the website, and I’ll stick around to support and train as needed 🙂

Bailiwick of Ivyeinrust – Honorable Lady Livia Petralia

October 2022 Business Meeting Minutes

Barony of Bhakail Meeting: October 11, 2022

Old Business

Champion and Commons

Event Autocrat Maryna Borowska reports: A great time was had by all! Lots of great food, a thriving plague sale, and there was some fencing. We had 63 gentles in attendance in total, and took in $72 in donations. Thank you everyone who helped out, particularly my deputy Margarette who did a LOT of the (metaphorical) heavy lifting, Chana for doing the plague sale, Scolastica for running the A&S Solar, and Angela for setting up the site rental.

Pennsic

Report from Camp Master Chana: We held a post-Pennsic meeting online at the end of September to go over things that went well or needed improvement for Pennsic 50.  I would like to step back from the role of sole Camp Master and either have a committee of deputies or turn over the position.  If you are interested in taking over some responsibilities, please contact me.

PAX Unplugged

No specific updates, but it is in the planning. There will be a signup sheet for people to volunteer shifts at the event.

Shire Wars

Is this weekend.

Yule

Yule is happening. The Seneschal has submitted a masking variance, and is awaiting a response. The paypal link will be up shortly. The autocrat (Chana) needs an experienced volunteer to run gate.

Herald (Salamander Pursuivant)

Ragna had expressed her interest in another term as Herald, and Maryna subsequently withdrew her letter of intent that was published last month. During the October Meeting, Ragna was voted into a second term, which is for two years. The Seneschal thanked Maryna for her willingness to volunteer.

New Business

Officer Positions

The current terms for several Bhakail officer positions will be ending over the next several months:

  • The term for Minister of the Lists (MOL) ends October 2022. MIkael expressed interest in continuing in the office, and a call for additional letters of intent will be forthcoming.
  • The term for Chatelaine ends December 2022. Chana expressed interest in continuing  in the office.
  • The term for Chancellor Minor ends in January 2023.
  • Mael Eoin had previously requested volunteers to replace him as Web Minister. Ellyn Grene and Finnolfr Hrafnson have expressed interest in helping with the website.
  • The Barony is also in need of an emergency seneschal

Tavern

Rickard and Margarette intend to submit a bid.

Waking of the Salamander

Scholastica and Taichleach are planning to submit a bid. April 21-23, 2023 are the tentative dates, based primarily  on availability at Ridley Creek State Park.

Iron Key

Lady Motte requested approval for purchase of Iron Key (loaner fighter gear). Purchase was approved up to $150.

Yule 2023

Philly has been exploring other venue options for Yule in 2023. Discussion was held about site requirements in terms of parking, public transit options, accessibility, kitchen facilities, and costs. A variety of potential venues were discussed. The possibility of collaborating with other neighboring groups for Yule was also raised as an option to possibly consider.

Officer Reports

Coronet’s Report – Baron Muin maqq Minain

Hello the Peoples of the Barony, Our neighbors and Our Allies;

We of Bhakail now have the honor of basking in the Autumnal Sun, as befits Salamanders, and for this you may be Thankful! The Pennsic War, that big-tent carnival draw so many look forward to, is right around the proverbial corner, and We all now must begin the arduous work, each in Our own various ways, in preparations for the big sweltering mishmash event.

In the barely Post Pennsic times,

Our Yule event is undulating ever closer, that chunky manta-ray in the rough waters off our metaphorical coast; We will need Our People ready for the A&S and Brewing Championships to choose Our newest Champions who would represent Bhakail in the coming year.

DEMOS! We have a possible demo coming down the pike, in the form of PAX-Unplugged, and if you want to show off for the public, and possibly recruit new members from amongst the public, please let the Seneschal know of your wish to participate.

(Remember, he’s Our Seneschal, not Our Seneschan’t!)

When you have time, send your fondest congratulations to Lady Motte Nachfalter for her amazing show of marshal weapons prowess! She has claimed, through her expansive use of arts most smashy, the mantle of Baronial Heavy Weapons Champion this last Sunday at the Harts and Horns Event!

And both Lady Motte and Lord Hopwel maqq Fosgan, the new Populace Champion, deserve Our fullest support and appreciation, for both of whom chose to Represent Bhakail, and made the fighting at the Harts and Horns Event a joy to witness.

In unrelated news, Lord Dagfinn of the 404 received his AOA at this last River Wars event.

In closing: Let us harken now to the Wise, and Winsome Poetry of Ancient Caledonii Peoples, with words by noted wordynessman, Eoghain the Long-wInded, sometimes known as the Least Grandson of the Revered Tjolk! Let these words whisk you away to a time e’er now long gone. Let its inspiration give your soul wings!

Delilah àlainn, milis mar apple pie
An-còmhnaidh a’ faighinn dàrna sealladh bho fellas passin’ by
Gach uair a chì thu i tha i còmhla ri fear eile
Delilah àlainn, sin an t-adhbhar carson

Be well;

Muin,

Baron of Bhakail

Seneschal’s Report – Máistir Mael Eoin mac Echuidh

Greetings to the Barony!

Fall events are well underway, though we are still wondering what participation and comfort levels are as things start to move indoors with cooler weather starting to show.

To that end, I’ve asked for a masking variance for Yule, at the request of the event steward, but we’ve yet to hear from Society on that. This may mean there is no requirement for masks, or that there will be that restriction in place. Please keep that in mind when registering, as we don’t know when we’ll know anything for certain.

If any practice or event wants a masking requirement variance (requiring vaccination checks are no longer allowed), please let me know.

Lastly, we’ve had some pressure to find new event sites, especially for our annual Yule event, but we need help to do so. The Barony understands the difficulties around parking and the kitchen at Yule, for example, but unless another site is found, the relationship we have with them makes it easy to accept bids that often don’t come in until after Pennsic, which is really pushing deadlines.

Sites often book solid many months in advance, so we need to improve our event bidding and acceptance practices. We don’t currently have a policy around deadlines for bidding on events, but going forward, I think we need to get that policy in place, in addition to having folks discover potential new event sites. If you are interested in doing so, please let me know.

For now, we have local events for the next few months settling nicely, starting to reach into next year, but we can never be too prepared, so if anyone wants to run events in 2023, the singer we lock in dates, contracts and plans for events, the better!

In Service,

Mael Eoin

Social Media Deputy – Magister Rowen Cloteworthy

A slightly slower month in new social media subscriptions, with only three and two of them from current members. Still, one more newcomer directed to Lady Chana. Chana has created a FB event for Yule and has made sure it’s been shared among the surrounding group pages. Iron Bog has shared information about their upcoming GeekFest demo. Folks continue to share items of interest and information continues to flow between social media and email.

Salamander Pursuivant’s Report – Lady Ragna Grímólfsdóttir

Anyone interested in producing scrolls for future Baronial Courts is welcome to contact me or our Baronial Signet, The Honorable Lady Mairi Crawford.

Chatelaine – Lady Chana Freidl the Maker

We had a bunch of newcomers join us at Commons, both taking on tasks as well as some joining us for their very first event!  They benefited greatly from the Plague Sale (we raised $277!!!) and have continued to come to social and getting to know the barony.  We’re so lucky to have such dedicated newcomers!  Many of them have plans to attend upcoming events, and we’ve even started talking them into camping with us at Waking of the Salamander next year!

Chancellor Minor’s – Honorable Lady Roseia Poseia

I helped the Barony of Carillion ‘s Chancellor Minor with Youth activity at G,G & G, and will be working with Lady Widow Kate with Youth Activities for Shires Wars.

Youth Activities are available on request.  Please email  all requests to 181843@menbers.eastkingdom.org

Webminister – Máistir Mael Eoin mac Echuidh

Not much movement on the new website, but we have two folks interested in the role – Ellyn and Finnolfr – so I’ll be introducing the system to them and see how they want to move forward.

Bailiwick of Ivyeinrust – Honorable Lady Livia Petralia

Minute notes recorded by Ellyn Grene

September 2022 Business Meeting Minutes

Barony of Bhakail Meeting: September 13, 2022

Old Business

Commons

Bhakail Champions and Commons is happening this Sunday. Gretchen reported that a full schedule of events is being finalized. The event is in good shape for potluck and troll. Settmour Swamp Ducal Challenge is the day before, at which friends of Bhakail are being elevated, so there is a full weekend of nearby events to enjoy.

Pennsic

After three years away, Pennsic 49 was a homecoming for all who attended.  A million thanks go out to everyone who was able to join us in Bhakail’s camp who helped make it a success. There will be a virtual post-Pennsic camp meeting scheduled soon, so please come with your constructive ideas and suggestions for how to make next year even better.

River Wars

The event is scheduled for Sept 23-25, with local competitions where all the local baronies will compete. Bhakail Baronial Champions for archery and thrown weapons will be happening during this event. Friends of Bhakail, Don Lorenzo and John Marshall will be elevated at the event, so plan on stopping by their vigils. Note that there will be no day board, but food trucks are being planned.

PAX Unplugged

Chana reports that once again, we are thrilled to be hosting a medieval gaming demo booth at PAX Unplugged this year!  It will be held at the Philadelphia Convention Center on December 2, 3, and 4.  Please reach out to Chana if you might be able to help staff the table.  You are welcome to wear garb if you’d like, but it is not mandatory.  Last year we were able to reach a good amount of people and some even made an effort to join their local baronies and come to Bhakail events!

Shire Wars

Shire Wars is scheduled for October 14-16. The event organizers have confirmed that participation for each barony will have an expense of $431.

Yule

Chana has a bid prepared for the event, and will be getting it sent in to the Seneschal and Exchequer soon. Mistress Juliana will be the feast chef, and does not anticipate any significant cost increases compared to past events. Currently considering an attendance cap of 250-300, feast cap of 120. An invitation has gone out to the Royals. The event will include the baronial brewing and A&S championships, and Chana also plans to extend an invitation to Athena’s Thimble to host a panel.

New Business

Knight Marshal

Voted unanimously via show of hands to accept the Letter of Intent from Lady Motte Nachtfalter for Knight Marshal

Salamander Pursuivant & Minister of the Lists

The current terms for each of these officer positions ends in October 2022, and a call for letters of intent will be forthcoming. See the attached letter of intent that has been submitted from Lady Maryna Borowska for Salamander Pursuivant.

Facilitating Transportation to Events

A discussion was held on how the Barony can help newcomers and others navigate transportation issues they may have that limit their attendance at events. Ideas generated are to are to construct and distribute a survey (on a rolling basis) to local members and newcomers so that information is available for the Chatelaine to share and connect people who need rides with those willing to offer car pooling. Information to gather would include:

  • The individual’s general location (eg zipcode, neighborhood, train lines they are near)
  • If they are willing/able to offer rides to others
  • If they need transportation to events

Officer Reports

Coronet’s Report – Baron Muin maqq Minain

Hello, Peoples of Bhakail!

This coming Sunday we celebrate Our annual Commons and Champions’ event.
We will also be holding two Order Meetings:
10:30 am, Order of the Horse
11:00 am, Order of the Salamander
Hope to see you all there!

Enjoy now these inspiring words:

Cuid de ridirean, bidh iad a ‘fuireach suas a’ sabaid ann an droch thogail
Cuid de ridirean, canar tarraing ris
Tha cuid de ridirean a’ miannachadh gun togadh an gàirdeanan caisteal dhaibh fhèin
Cuid de ridirean, tha iad ag iarraidh gun tuiteadh iad
Ach bidh iad fhathast a ‘dùsgadh, tha iad fhathast a’ faicinn an aoigh agad
Mo Thighearnan, chan eil iad fhathast cinnteach dè a tha iad a’ seasamh, oh-oh
Dè tha iad a’ seasamh airson?

Mar sin is e seo e, squires, is e seo cogadh
Dè tha sinn a’ feitheamh?
Carson nach bris sinn na riaghailtean mu thràth?
Cha robh iad riamh mar aon a chreideadh an hype
Sàbhail sin airson an dubh is geal
Feuch dà uair cho cruaidh, agus tha iad leth mar as toil leat
Ach an seo thig iad a-rithist a sheac an snaidhm sin
Tha sin ceart gu leòr (tha sin ceart gu leòr)
Tha martarach na do leabaidh a-nochd
Tha i a’ cur stad air do chnàmhan bho bhith a’ faighneachd cò thu, cò thu, cò thu
O, cò thusa? Mmh-mhm
Mmh-mhm
Uill, ridirean, tha iad a’ miannachadh gun tigeadh an t-òran seo gu crìch
‘Adhbhar b’ urrainn dhaibh cuid de charaidean a chleachdadh airson atharrachadh

Ach cuid de ridirean, bidh iad an-còmhnaidh a’ buannachadh (Bidh iad an-còmhnaidh a’ buannachadh)

Mo Thighearnan, chan eil iad fhathast cinnteach dè a tha iad a’ seasamh, oh-oh
Dè tha iad a’ seasamh airson?

An crochadh slabhraidh dleastanais airson seo?
Tha iad ag ionndrainn am Baran agus a’ Bhan-bharan airson seo?
Chan e, nuair a chì iad na rionnagan, nuair a chì iad –
Nuair a chì iad na reultan, bidh an clogaid a ‘fàgail
Nuair a chluinneas iad òran a
Tha iad coltach ri eala, mar sin thig air adhart
O thig air adhart, o thig air adhart, o thig air adhart (Waily, whaily, whaily!)
Uill, seo e sguireasach, tha sin uile
Còig mionaidean a-steach, agus tha iad sgìth a-rithist
Deich bliadhna de seo, chan eil iad cinnteach a bheil duine a ‘tuigsinn
Chan eil seo airson na trolls agus gnomes
Tha mi duilich a dhol às, a Dhòmhnaill, ach b’ fheudar dhaibh falbh
Cò air an raon a tha airson bàsachadh leis fhèin uile air an tiormachadh ann an grian an fhàsaich?
Tha mo chridhe briste airson mo Phearsa
Agus a’ bhreug ris an canadh iad “dleasdanas”
Agus an uairsin bidh mi a’ coimhead a-steach do shùilean mo phreantas
A dhuine uasail, cha chreideadh tu
Na rudan as iongantach
Faodaidh sin tighinn bho
Cuid de bhreugan uamhasach
O, oh, gu bràth, oh
O ooh gu bràth, oh-oh
O, oh, gu bràth, oh
O ooh gu bràth, oh-oh
An ridire sin eile, cha chreideadh tu
An aisling a bh ‘aca dìreach mu do dheidhinn fhèin agus dhomhsa
Mhol iad thu a-nis, ach tha sinn le chèile ag aontachadh

‘S ann airson na ‘s fearr a gheibh sinn ar n-astar, oh-oh, oh-o whaily, whaily, OOOOH!

Best Wishes;

Muin, Baron of Bhakail

Seneschal’s Report – Máistir Mael Eoin mac Echuidh

Having come out of the summer more or less unscathed, we find ourselves in a strange mix of the usual post-Pennsic crush of events compounded with the post-lockdown restriction on many things.  Our calendars may seem more packed, or we may just be out of practice with the pace of how things used to be.  Please keep all of this in mind when dealing with others and even more so, please be kind to yourselves if you don’t feel up to doing everything that’s appearing on the calendar.

That said, it’s time for events!  Champions and Commons is this weekend (!) with many other local events hot on its heels.  Well, and Ducal Challenge right before it.  Please look to our neighboring groups and consider attending their events coming up to reconnect with friends and support one another’s efforts.  Even more so if you could find time to volunteer!

Speaking of neighbors, there’s some exciting news coming for one of the local Shires and other news coming from the BoD, maybe as early as tonight.  I don’t know the details on the latter, or what Kingdom will add to it, but keep your eyes open.

We have a lot to look forward to, and a lot to celebrate.  Here’s hoping we all continue to do so safely and at whatever paces we each might like.

Social Media Deputy – Magister Rowen Cloteworthy

What more can be said by the Social Media office except, “OMG, so many new people in the FB group!” We had 17 new joins to the Baronial FB page between today and when we would have had an August meeting, most of them newcomers who have been introduced virtually to Baron Muin and Lady Chana. And we had an additional 6 subscribers, most newcomers, between the July and what would have been the August meeting. Announcements and information continue to be shared around between social media and email, including announcements of Baronial Order meetings at Commons along with lots of other information, descriptions of Orders and Awards, announcements for the upcoming HHD event, and the criteria for the upcoming Baronial A&S Champion Tourney at Yule.

Salamander Pursuivant’s Report – Lady Ragna Grímólfsdóttir

No report.

Knight Marshal – Position open at time of the meeting

Rapier Marshal – Don Melchior Kriebel

Practice continued to be held in the Mayfair Presbyterian Church in NE Philadelphia. Attendance has been moderate. We took two weeks off for Pennsic.

Pennsic happened. I was unable to attend this year and have little knowledge beyond Bhakail having a decent representation on the field.

Commons will happen in September. As the Bhakail Rapier Champion, Diego, is not a fencing marshal I will be likely running the tournament with his input regarding the format.

The autocrat of Shire Wars and D’Oryen have requested that I take the mantle of Rapier Marshal in Charge (MiC) for Shire Wars this year. D’Oryen has been the MiC of this event  the past 2 times, and both feel that the MiC should rotate between the various shire’s MiCs. I have accepted the role of MiC.

Archery Marshal – Lady Maryna Borowska

Practices continue to be held on Sundays. In previous years we have continued to hold practice until Thanksgiving or so, depending on the weather.

His Excellency will be selecting His Baronial Champion at River Wars, so if you are attending River Wars and want to compete, be prepared!

I would like to approach the Exchequer/Financial Committee soon to request some funds to upgrade our practice equipment. I still have some research to do in order to provide estimates of what things might cost, so stay tuned.

Thrown Weapons Marshal – The Honorable Lord Mikael melrakki

Practices are continuing on Sunday Afternoons. There have been discussions regarding adding Combat Archery to the practices on an occasional basis.

No Practice on Sunday September 18th due to Bhakail Commons.

Bhakail Thrown Weapons and Archery Champions are scheduled to occur at River Wars.

Minister of the List – The Honorable Lord Mikael melrakki

I will be running tournaments at Champions and Commons.  FYI…the Kingdom MoL is stepping down and is starting to collect letters of intent for a replacement (I will not be submitting a LoI).

Exchequer – Mistress Philadelphia Brown

Beck of Copeland is the new Deputy Exchequer. Progress is being made on getting the banking information updated with the new officers.

Chamberlain – Honorable Lord Bryan Mac Dhunghaill an Boghadair

As Yule approaches I will get with the Event Steward to make sure they have everything needed.

Chronicler – Lady Ellyn Grene

Thank you for the service from Brandr Stillingr, who has relocated out of Bhakail and stepped down as Deputy Chronicler. If you (yes you, the person reading this), is interested in learning more about the Chronicler and Deputy Chronicler positions, please reach out to me at chronicler@bhakail.eastkingdom.org

The last issue of The Salamander was published on July 26 and is available on the Bhakail website if you haven’t read it. We are currently working on the next issue with a planned publication date in late September. Content should be submitted to the Chronicler by Tuesday, September 20.

Historian – Honorable Lord Bryan Mac Dhunghaill an Boghadair

As Historian I will be attending Commons, River Wars, Harts and Horn, Shire Wars, Buckland Cross Championship and of course Yule.

Minister of Arts & Sciences – Lady Scolastica Capellaria

Members of the barony are quite busy with arts and sciences and have shown interest in all manner of things from song and dance to embroidery and scribal activities.

At Bhakail Commons I will host a MOAS solar in the afternoon. All are welcome to bring their current projects, questions and ideas.

There are several opportunities for competitions and displays upcoming at local events. September 23-25 at Olympic River War in Iron Bog (Mullica Hill, NJ) there will be a display, baronial A&S competition, and classes in an artisan village.

October 8 at Harts and Horns in Hartshorn-dale (Douglassville, PA) there will be an A&S display and garbed plushy competition.

October 14-16 Shire Wars X in Shire of Montevale (Jonestown, PA) there will be classes, A&S displays/competitions and more To be Announced.

November 19th in the Shire of the Rusted Woodlands (Sparta, NJ) 100 Mins War and East Kingdom Novice Day will host an A&S competition.

December 10th Bhakail Yule (Philadelphia, PA) will host our Baronial A&S Competition and Baronial Brewing Competition.

Questions may be directed via Messenger to me.

As always, please check event announcements for details and let me know if you have any questions about entering competitions/displays and other activities. If you are interested in learning a new craft or need assistance with researching a particular area, please contact me at Moas@bhakail.eastkingdom.org

Chatelaine – Lady Chana Freidl the Maker

Our newcomers can hardly be called “new” with the amount of involvement I see from them!  From baronial thrown weapons champions to scribal practices, I’m thrilled with the amount of people I see finding their path in the SCA from our Barony.  To support our newcomers, I will be holding a Plague Sale of old Gold Key garb during Commons – please remember to bring cash!  Everything will be $10 or under, and all the money from the sale will go towards new garb that will fill in some gaps in our Gold Key.

Chancellor Minor’s – Lady Honorable Lady Roseia Poseia

Youth Activities are available on request.  Please email  all requests to 181843@members.eastkingdom.org

I will be working with Lady Widow Kate with Youth Activities for Shires Wars.

Webminister – Máistir Mael Eoin mac Echuidh

I haven’t made progress on the new look and feel for our site, and I am torn on whether I should at this point as I feel I need to divulge myself of this office.  Being Seneschal for a very active Barony coming out of the past couple of years while also hosting weekly and occasional gatherings at our house on top of some big life changes has proven a bit much for my personal schedule.  As such, I think if anyone were to pick up the office, it should not be immediately after a refresh of the website, in case they wanted to take on that project themselves.

If anyone is interested in the position, please let me know; I will gladly show you around and support in any technical sense (I am no designer, though) 😉

Bailiwick of Ivyeinrust – Honorable Lady Livia Petralia

Mistress Philadelphia reported that a newcomer is interested in restarting the Penn student group.

Letter of Intent for Salamander Pursuivant – Lady Maryna Borowska

Please consider this my Letter of Intent for the office of Salamander Pursuivant, Bhakail Baronial Herald. I know Lady Ragna’s term ends in October so I wanted to put my name in now.

I was Ivy Pursuivant for the Bailiwick from late 2018 to mid-2022. I have experience as both a book and voice herald, having assisted in a number of Baronial and Royal Courts, as well as with heraldic submissions and commentary. Heraldry is one of my SCA passions and I would be thrilled to serve the Barony in this position.

YIS,

Maryna

May 2022 Business Meeting Minutes

Barony of Bhakail Meeting: May 10, 2022

Old Business

Pennsic

Report from the Bhakail Camp Master:  Pennsic is coming, and is not likely to be canceled unless something crazy happens in the next month or two. Bhakail’s camp is shrinking for the year, with some people still dropping out due to concerns about COVID. We will have to figure out a seniority policy for next year because otherwise camp would be VERY full. The issue is that the policy in the past has been that people who camped the previous year are given priority for the next year–with some long-time Bhakail camp members skipping this year due to COVID, we need to make sure they still have space next year. Policies for next year will be discussed at upcoming Pennsic specific meetings.

Please email your camp master if you haven’t responded with camp fee, camp form, or have any questions or changes in plans.

There was a question about newcomers who have asked about camping with Bhakail this year, but knowing that the barony space is usually full, should they register with Bhakail? Chana said any newcomers should reach out to her (campmaster@bhakail.eastkingdom.org).

Letters of intent for Exchequer

The Senechal has not yet received any letters of intent, and will continue advertising.

Site for a possible future camping event

Alesia has reached out to the contacts for the girl scout camps and is still waiting for an answer regarding pricing, etc.

Waking of the Salamander

Event Steward Angela Mori reported that all bases are covered, and there were the following questions/remarks during discussion:

  • Muin requested that Court be on Sunday
  • Alesia commented that there is no pre-registration required with the new policies from the Kingdom. Event cap is 100 (set by the site), with 30 current pre-registrations.
  • Angela asked if there is somewhere in Media to pick up a load of firewood?
    • Mael Eoin referred to Ryan Young (Bhakail adjacent)
    • Mikael also said he is willing to donate wood if someone can pick it up
  • Eleanora the Tylemake will help with site tokens
  • There will be no feast, and if people are interested in group cooking they can reach out to Angela (204522@members.eastkingdom.org) to coordinate
  • It is unsure if there will be fighting, as most fighters will be at War of the Roses that weekend
  • There is an opportunity for anyone interested in teaching a class on any topic; reach out to Angela (204522@members.eastkingdom.org) if interested in volunteering
  • Taichleach reported that the Gaming Champion will be bringing games
  • Angela will be brining a pavilion for shade and there is some tree coverage, but bring pop ups if you can
  • Angela would like to have a get-together of people who have had different positions in the SCA to talk about what volunteer opportunities are available and what behind-the-scenes work is required to keep things working.

Commons

  • The site reservation has been taken care of
  • Event is scheduled for September 18, 2022
  • Angela is interested in being event steward as is Roseia. Angela would like to turn it over to Roseia to run and is willing to help as she can.

New Business

River War

Roseia was the Bhakail liaison to the planning committee, but is stepping down because she is not able to attend River War. Sterling wants the event to have a Medieval Olympics theme, and is “Looking for people to help him plan shenanigans.” The liaison needs to be available to attend virtual planning meetings and discuss events. Mikael has volunteered to be the liaison, since he is already on staff for River War.

Yule

Alesia noted that we need an event steward. Brandr is willing to co-steward.

Election for Minister of Arts and Sciences

A call for letters of intent for the position of Minister of Arts and Sciences (MoAS) was published in April. One letter was submitted, from Scolastica Capellaria. A vote was taken and Scolastica was elected unanimously. Eleanora the Tylemaker volunteered to serve as deputy.

Letters of Intent for Seneschal

A call for letters of intent for the position of Seneschal was published in April. Two letters were submitted, from Martyn de Halliwell and Mael Eoin mac Echuidh (see the letters of intent appended.) A formal vote for Seneschal will be taken at the June business meeting.

Other Business

  • Muin – Agreed to participate in a largess exchange at Pennsic among members of House Runnymede. He is seeking donations of largess specifically to the Barony of L’Ile du Dragon Dormant (https://dragondormant.eastkingdom.org/); if interested contact Muin directly at baron@bhakail.eastkingdom.org.
  • Eleanora is working with a library group making garb at a demo. The library is looking for fabric donations for cloaks and tunics (viking), and is also willing to pay for sewing machines (up to $50).

Officer Reports

Coronet’s Report – Baron Muin maqq Minain

Hello the Peoples of the Barony, Our neighbors and Our Allies;

The sleepy months of Winter are now behind us, and We are now in the grips of the pollen laden Spring! Huzzahchu!

With that said, the event, Waking of the Salamander is right around the corner! Whether you choose to camp with Us, or day trip, the Event will be worth your salt!

On a related note, We had planned, some two years passed, to participate in an exchange of Largess and Favors with the participating members of House Runnymede. With the plague that has gripped the land, this activity has been pushed off until THIS year at Pennsic!

Bhakail will be trading Largess with the Barony of L’Ile du Dragon Dormant!

Any of Our fine craftspeople and artisans who wish to contribute to this Largess Basket, please contact the Baron.

In closing: Let us harken now to the Wise, and Winsome Poetry of Ancient Icelandic Peoples! Let these words whisk you away to a time e’er now long gone. Let it’s inspiration give your soul wings!

Grafa, grafa holu, grafa, grafa hola
Ég er dvergur og er að grafa holu
Grafa, grafa holu, grafa holu
Við getum aldrei grafið of djúpt
Ég er dvergur og er að grafa holu
Grafa, grafa holu, grafa, grafa hola
Ég er dvergur og er að grafa holu

Be Well;

Seneschal’s Report – Honorable Lady Alesia de Maris of Ravenstar

The kingdom has dropped the requirement that you must pre-register for events. This now opens the kingdom a bit more and it means that if you are interested in attending the Waking of the Salamander you can attend without making a reservation.

Bhakail Commons is coming up in September. By tradition this event is held on a Sunday and is free. It is a good event for newcomers or for bringing friends and family who are curious about the SCA.

We are looking for an Event Steward for Yule. It’s never too early to start planning so let us know if you have any questions or are interested in being on the event staff.

Events are happening. Please stay safe.

Social Media Deputy – Magister Rowen Cloteworthy

Another month of social media. Photos of our new Prince and Princess have been shared to FB and email, along with a link to a video of them being Crowned. Information about this summer’s KWHSS has been posted. There’s been information on a talk at Penn, a class on improving folks’ wiki pages, information about largess for the Crown, an event and a demo shared from our friends in HHD, and more, along with six new subscribers to the FB page, including some people new to the Barony or planning to move here shortly, all of whom have been introduced to Lady Chana as Chatelaine.

We have been working on plans to begin publishing a newsletter to be sent out by email. Our goals are to publish a newsletter every other month, and to have the first issue sent out the week before Waking of the Salamander.  Has a hard drive for baronial history, also working on a paper record.

Chancellor Minor’s – Lady Honorable Lady Roseia Poseia

Nothing to report.

Webminister – Máistir Mael Eoin mac Echuidh

Work on redoing the site continues; I’m trying to keep some aspects of our custom layout, but the “custom” parts that show the latest posts in three categories (Announcements, Events and Activities) can be hard to implement well.

I think we can drop Activities as a front-page must-see since we don’t have people providing content for our activities as we do them, so they get outdated pretty quickly.  Same for Events as we often don’t have a good write-up for our events and have many months in between Tavern and Commons where anything interesting might be featured.

I’m open to thoughts on what should be on our front page, but I think we should feature some photos (which have been provided already) showing regular Bhakail activities that people can expect to find happening locally when they find us online. Other things (like business meeting minutes) shouldn’t be featured too prominently as they’re not going to be appealing to visitors, but need to be published online somewhere.  Just not prominently as a feature of the Barony for newcomers 😉

If anyone’s interested in helping in any of this, and/or is interested in the office in general, feel free to reach out 🙂

Bailiwick of Ivyeinrust – Honorable Lady Livia Petralia

Martyn reported that he met with Livia and filed the quarterly reports. Two Penn sophomores have expressed interest in joining, which would mean space in Penn’s student activity fair.

Minute notes recorded by Brandr Stillingr and Ellyn Grene

Letter of Intent for Seneschal – Lord Martyn de Halliwell

Unto Lady Alesia de Maris, esteemed Seneschal of the mighty and great Barony of Bhakail does Lord Martyn de Halliwell send greetings!

Thank you for your service to the Barony over the last three years. When you first stepped up in 2019, none of us could have foreseen what was to come less than a year after you took on what was already a complex and sometimes difficult job. The work you’ve done has been excellent, your leadership has been exceptional, and the Barony is a better place today because we have had you as our Seneschal.

This is my Letter of Intent to serve as the next Seneschal of the Barony of Bhakail, beginning in June 2022, if that is the will of the Populace of the Barony.

Although you’ve known me since I first showed up in your living room 16 years ago when you hosted a Newcomers Gathering, not everyone in our fair Barony knows me so well, and I would like to share some of my background and qualifications:

I already have experience serving as a Seneschal within and for the Barony: I was Acting Seneschal for Bhakail and Interim Seneschal for Black Icorndall, and have also served a term as Seneschal of Ivyeinrust. In addition, I’ve been the Emergency Deputy for the Barony for the last 3 years and Chaired our Bylaws Committee in 2013, which successfully completed a substantial rewrite of the Baronial Bylaws.

In other roles, I have previously served as Deputy Mayor of Event Resources for Pennsic XLIV and served Bhakail twice as it’s Chronicler and twice as it’s Chamberlain. I’ve been the Autocrat/Event Steward for 5 Bhakail events, including two Yule Revels, and have nearly all the service I’ve done in the SCA on my EK Wiki page, found here: [https://wiki.eastkingdom.org/wiki/Martyn_de_Halliwell]

Outside the SCA, I have often used experience I’ve garnered in my 15 years in the SCA to help other organizations host better events and build programs with better volunteer “health” management, with special emphasis on the importance of self-care, creating a caring community of volunteers, and the art of delegation.

I most recently spent the last two years as the State Chapter President for a large young professionals organization which I grew from 12 to 27 active chapters, restructured it’s Charter, established *successful* working Committees, created trainings for event planning and volunteer management, and successfully implemented a program that had our all-volunteer organization create dedicated self-care time and meet overall organizational health goals. I also re-established the organization’s presence in a larger, national organization where I currently hold the position of Mid-Atlantic Region Director.

I currently sit on the Executive Committee & Board of that organization as it’s Immediate Past President, in an advisory role, and serve on three other organization’s Boards in the Philadelphia region.

In the past, I have taken on several roles in the SCA because I felt I “had to” or because I hadn’t properly glued my helium hand to the floor at the start of a meeting. Thankfully, I have grown a lot since then, and I am writing this Letter of Intent today not because I feel I need to, but because I *want* to.

I am excited about the opportunity to serve the Barony as it’s next Seneschal. To listen to its populace, to find ways to work with everyone to not only ensure our compliance with Society and Kingdom, but also ensure that that compliance does not become burdensome to our Officers and other volunteers. To make sure that we not only grow the Barony, but do so in a way that is healthy and sustainable.

I look forward to continuing the important work of coordinating between Officers and other volunteers to continue growing the Barony and ensuring we retain our existing membership, continue the success of our in-person events as we hopefully continue to exit the worst of the Pandemic and step into the next phase that is seemingly upon us.

If anyone wishes to discuss my letter or anything else, I can always be reached via email at 181171@members.eastkingdom.org or via call/text at 484-557-8757

Bhakail has always been my home and I have gained so much in my life from having the SCA be a part of it. It is my genuine hope to have the opportunity to give back to the Barony now and use everything I have learned to help the Barony continue to flourish.

In service,

Martyn

Letter of Intent for Seneschal -Mael Eoin mac Echuidh

Greetings,

I would like to state my intent to run for Seneschal of our Barony and to thank Alesia for her service and stewardship of our group, especially through the difficulties of the past couple of years.  Other groups have not fared as well, stayed as active or even grown like Bhakail has during your term and I would like to acknowledge your role and thank you for that.

I am throwing my hat with the intent to see some specific items through.  If anyone else is considering the role, I would like to discuss supporting one another, whatever the outcome.

Specifically, I would:

* Solicit for an active, engaged Emergency Deputy Seneschal who would also be interested in the Seneschal role at some point.

* Offer the opportunity for anyone to be a Deputy for visibility into the job, especially new (or newer) members.

* Encourage the Emergency Deputy or other Deputy Seneschal to regularly do routine duties to become familiar with the role (run meetings as allowed by our Bylaws, etc.).

I would ideally serve no more than one term, and support one of the above folks in going for the role.

Projects I want to see happen:

* Review and redo our Bylaws; it’s been 6 years since the last review and they were intended to be reviewed regularly. We should consider changing/removing anything that’s not working out for us, if how we operate now is at odds with our Bylaws (or else make sure we’re following what’s been shared with Kingdom as our Bylaws of record).

* Actively help realize a Southern and/or Western Region identity.  Actively work with other groups and individuals, supporting one another to have successful events (via staffing, cross-promotion, etc.) and avoid conflicts wherever possible.

* Host or facilitate regular “How to be a…” classes to help people understand what different offices are, what being an officer looks like for specific offices, etc. plus go over event roles, too (event steward, head cook, etc.).  Actively demystify some of the roles in the SCA where we don’t always know what goes on until you do it.

* Have more discussion ahead of and publish an agenda for business meetings.  Encourage more of an audience by leveraging the mailing list as our main venue for group discussions.

Why I think I’d be good for the role:

* The business side has been part of my SCA experience since I started out; whether I’ve been an officer or not, I make a point to go to business meetings.  I’ve held offices since the early days of my involvement, from Canton through Kingdom levels, including Baron, Herald, Knight Marshal, Seneschal, Exchequer, Chronicler, and Webminister.

* I like making things efficient and hopefully easier for everyone, since we’re all volunteers.  If we have rules to adjust, let’s adjust them.  If we have extra items in our Bylaws not adding value or potentially causing issues, let’s consider their place.  If Society or Kingdom already has a rule to cover something adequately, we don’t always need more definition or restriction, especially if the higher laws have changed.

* I’m active and engaged; since moving to the area, I’ve been part of our activities and events, from helping to start the Social, holding offices, and running or staffing events.  I’ve also made a point of focusing on newcomers, including creating a successful newcomer household that has expanded to other Baronies as well as encouraging and supporting newer members to step up to offices, take on roles at events, and more.

What else am I doing now (full disclosure of existing commitments):

* New Groups Deputy Seneschal for the East Kingdom: This would not be a conflict (I checked with our Kingdom Seneschal already) and if a conflict did arise (if we had a new Canton form or if Black Icorndall wanted to come back, etc.), I would drop that role.

* Bhakail Webminister: I would look to hand this off.

* Coill Tuar Webminister-at-Large: I would look to hand this off.

* Plenipotentiary Deputy Kingdom Webminister: this means as much or as little as I want, to stay engaged with the Kingdom and Society Webministry.  There’s no defined duties, other than any projects I want to work on.

I realize there’s a lot here, but it was a tough decision and I wanted to make sure if I did put myself forward that *I* knew why and should be able to convey the reasoning along with any considerations I should make known around former or current roles.

I look forward to seeing other candidates step up and whoever is chosen, I hope to work with anyone else to further projects for the benefit of us all, whoever is in the role and wherever the ideas come from.

In Service,

Mael Eoin mac Echuidh

April 2022 Business Meeting Minutes

Barony of Bhakail Meeting April 12, 2022

Old Business

Tavern wrap up

Event Steward Tighernán órdha reported that Tavern “At the Sign of the Squirrel and Hound” had a great turn out, tickets sold out and most ticket holders came to the event. There was food, games, bardic, and games and bardic championships. Many people at Coronation mentioned how great the event was. The Exchequer thinks the event will make the expected amount once the cleaning fee is returned. All in all, a great success and the organizers feel good about it. Baron Muin heard from three different peers that they enjoyed Tavern immensely and look forward to attending the event next year. Competitive guitar tuning and the “Shakepeare off” were the highlights of the event.

For 2023, Tavern is currently penciled in for the typical date of the final Saturday in January.

Pennsic

Pennsic is happening. No changes in plans. Check your tents and talk to your camp masters.

Letters of intent for Exchequer

The Senechal has not yet received any letters of intent, and will continue advertising.

Waking of the Salamander

Will be held Memorial Day weekend at Ridley Creek State Park. Alesia will be filling out paperwork for the insurance certificates and submitting the $25 fee for the park.

New Business

River War update

Roseia Posey reported that the brainstorming team for River Wars had their first meeting. Nothing is yet set in stone, but ideas were discussed for the Olympic River Wars with Barony competing against Barony, ideas for A&S, kids events, Chess and an arm wrestling tournament. The next meeting is later this month, and Roseia will continue giving updates. If you have any ideas, forward them to Roseia. The brainstorming group wants to make sure all Baronies have input so it is a successful event.

Site for a possible future camping event

Alesia has been looking for a camping site in the confines of the Barony. She has found there are several girl scout campgrounds and has been in contact with them. Among the several campgrounds is Shelly Ridge in Lafayette Hill and another one in Gilbertsville (not in the Barony, but close in Hartshorn-dale). This one (presumably Gilbertsville) has a dining hall that seats 260, a large open space, cabins, and would allow tents to be put up. This site could hold up to 500 participants. Their contact will be getting back to Alesia with pricing, etc. These sites are not available to rent June-August due to conflicts with girl scout events.

Commons

Alesia reported that Barry has volunteered to run the event.

Yule

Alesia reported we will likely be using the German Society as the site for the event again, and need to find someone to run the event and volunteers to help. Alesia will be putting out a call for volunteers. Muin suggested that people thinking about running it, should think about the last few Yules you have been to and what you would like to add to it, do differently, or keep the same. Martyn, Bryan, and Philadelphia offered to mentor anyone who wants to put in a bid.

Call for letters of intent for Minister of Arts and Sciences

The MOAS (Minister of Arts and Sciences) for Bhakail is stepping down as her term of office is up. Alesia is accepting letters of Intent for this position until the May Barony meeting. She has received one letter at this time, and if more letters are submitted for the position it will go to a formal vote per the Baronial by-laws. Please send an email to seneschal@bhakail.eastkingdom.org if you want to submit a letter of intent.

Call for letters of intent for Seneschal

Alesia’s term as Seneschal is done at the June Barony meeting. After careful consideration she has decided not to ask for a second term. She announced at tonight’s meeting that she will be accepting letters of Intent for the position of Seneschal. If you want to submit a letter of intent please email seneschal@bhakail.eastkingdom.org.

Other Business

  • Bryan has been calling for memories of Bhakail. He will be scanning photos and blurring faces if unable to get consent to post. Will be taking permission forms to events for collecting photos and stories. He has been reaching out through Facebook, and asking organizers to publicize it at events. Will be posting it on the Bhakail email list.
  • Martyn reported that the royal pavilion was damaged in Gulf Wars. He worked on repairing it for Coronation, and will be organizing a work group to do some further work on it before May Crown.
  • Mael raised the issue that the technical site (website, email) make it difficult to have co-officers such as the Co-Chroniclers that were confirmed at the March meeting. Due to this, Ellyn will be initially serving as Chronicler with Brandr as Deputy Chronicler, and they will swap positions next year.
  • Discussion was held about when and where to resume in-person social events and meetings. Possible locations might include a restaurant, Ridley Creek State Park, Mael’s or Mikael’s back yards. The thought is to start slow and give people time to ease into it in-person socials and see how it goes. Plan is to continue virtual business meetings going forward

Officer Reports

Coronet’s Report – Baron Muin maqq Minain

To Those who would read Our Words;

Greeting and good tidings from the Coronet of Bhakail.

Recently we held our annual January Tavern event, and I have heard from many good Peera and Gentles after the event that they appreciated and loved being there.

Out heartfelt thanks to the Event Steward and Feast-Board-Officiant.

Several wonderful libations were donated, and Muin thanks everyone for their participation.

As Spring has come, let us turn our hearts now to preparing for te Awaking of te Salamander, and think on the traditions of art, poetry, culinaria, and martial chicanery that we May engage therein.

A poem to get us Started! (In the original Kingo…Welsh. it’s in Welsh..!)

Nid ydym yn mynd i’w gymryd
O na, nid ydym yn mynd i’w gymryd
Nid ydym yn mynd i’w gymryd mwyach

Mae gennym ni’r hawl i’w ddewis
Nid oes unrhyw ffordd y byddwn yn ei golli
Dyma ein bywyd, dyma ein cân

Byddwn yn brwydro yn erbyn y pwerau a fydd yn gyfiawn
Peidiwch â dewis achos ein tynged
Dydych chi ddim yn ein hadnabod ni, dydych chi ddim yn perthyn

Nid ydym yn mynd i’w gymryd
O na, nid ydym yn mynd i’w gymryd
Nid ydym yn mynd i’w gymryd mwyach

With Hipe for a gentle year ahead;

Muin

Baron of Bhakail

Seneschal’s Report – Honorable Lady Alesia de Maris of Ravenstar

Coronation was this past weekend; there are a lot of pictures on Facebook and it looked very impressive. The crowns are awesome.  Tavern happened and it was a lot of fun. The bardic competition became an audience participation event.

There are a number of events coming up including the Waking of the Salamander on Memorial Day weekend and Hunter’s Picnic in Caer Adamant on June 12th. The summer is looking good.

I’m continuing to work on a refresh of the Bhakail website.  We’ve had new people joining the mailing list and some turnover in officers and Champions happening this month, so I’ll be confirming details and doing updates as needed.

I raised an issue with “Co-Chroniclers” not being easy in the officer model on the technical side; we’ll need to indicate a Chronicler and a Deputy, however the work is expected to be split but have not yet heard what the decision was to make the necessary changes.

Seneschal’s Report – Honorable Lady Alesia de Maris of Ravenstar

Greetings!

As of February 1st, the East Kingdom will permit small gatherings of up to 15 people. This means we can resume fight practice, fencing practice and workshops. All announcements for these in-person gatherings must include the Board approved Health Acknowledgement. If you need the correct wording, please let me know.

Tavern has moved to April 2nd. There are seven spaces left so get your reservation in!

Social Media Deputy – Magister Rowen Cloteworthy

Waauugghh Bhakail!

A slow new subscriber month this month with only four new people joining our FB groups. Information still flowing between the Kingdom’s social media pages and our page and email list. Things like recommendations for Kingdom Polling Orders and information about changes to in-person gatherings. Hartshorn-Dale has shared information for their upcoming Nova Schola and a request for help for an event in November. Until next month.

Minister of Arts & Sciences’ Report – Lady Maryna Borowska

Hello the Barony,

The days are getting longer, slowly but surely, and while case counts are still high, they are declining after the bid January spike, so in-person events are tentatively returning soon.

Check the East Kingdom event calendar for events – there are a few scholas coming up, both local-ish and ethereal! I personally am also planning to attend the two big embroidery events (Academy of St. Clare in Aethelmarc and Embroidery Schola up north in the Barony of the Bridge), so let me know if you’re interested in carpooling!

Hartshorn-Dale’s Nova Schola will have a Garbed Plushie A & S Display for those wishing to enter!

The Baronial Bardic and Gaming championships are tentatively planned for the rescheduled Tavern event on April 2. It’s also a great event to show off any brews you’ve been working on 😉

Hartshorn-Dale is seeking participants for a demo August 11th – 13th. Let them know if you are available.

And as always, a reminder: I hope you’re all creating awesome things and doing cool art, but it’s OK if you’re not. Living in a pandemic is incredibly draining and taking care of yourself is the most important thing. <3

YIS,

New business

  • Spring Camping Event – Lady Angela brought a proposal for a camping event on Memorial Day weekend, Waking the Salamander. The proposed site is Ridley Creek State Park. The site does allow for group camping and has two rustic campsites, with firepits and grills available. Both sites have been reserved. There was some discussion about the event conflicting with other events that are on the Events calendar or soon will be on the calendar. Alesia will put out an email on the seneschal list to see if anyone else is having an event that weekend. Voted to send the proposal to the finance committee.

  • Thrown Weapons and Archery – Practice will begin when the weather improves. Mikael will be looking for help with repairing targets and cleaning up in preparation of practices starting again.

  • Local event – Nova Schola will be held on March 5th in Hartshorn-dale.

Old business

  • Tavern – The event has been moved to April 2nd.  Got the new insurance paperwork, 7 slots left. The Gaming Champion will attend as long as circumstances allow. Still waiting to hear from the Bardic Champion.

  • Exchequer Deputy – The Exchequer is looking for a successor. Her term is up in June 2022.

  • Chronicler Deputy – Chronicler is stepping down; we continue to look for a replacement. This is a required office, and we need a replacement as soon as possible.

  • Event sites committee – No report from the committee. Alesia looked for campgrounds within the confines of Bhakail and found a Girl Scout camp in Lafayette Hill that rents their facilities to outside groups. There is a message on their website that they are currently not renting to outside groups in order to allow the local troops to make reservations. Alesia sent an email to the administration office that when they begin renting out the space again, we would be interested in it, perhaps in 2023.

  • Pennsic – Still happening, there will be an online Pennsic meeting on February 24th. If you plan on camping with Bhakail at Pennsic, please try to attend.

Meeting ended.

Coronet’s Report – Baron Muin maqq Minain

Baron – People are worn out, burned out, spread thin. Please be respectful of the entire situation. Lots of people are struggling right now.

Hello, Bhakail!

As Pliny the Elder was often known to say:

Nos auferet loquentes
Nescio quid dicam
Dicam usquam
Hodie alius dies ad inveniendum te
CONSTERNATIO
Veniam ad tuum amorem, bene?

Wise words indeed. We should all, in these trying times, pay heed.

Be well.

December 2021 Business Meeting Minutes

Coronet’s Report – Baron Muin maqq Minain

Hello and well wishes to the People of Bhakail, Our neighbors, Our Allies… and That Guy…

This last weekend We held our annual event, Bhakail Yule, and I would like to take a moment to thank and congratulate those Noble Souls without whom this event would not have been possible.

Lady Scolastica and ThLord Bryan who stewarded the event. This is no easy task, and any sizable event in the SCA often becomes a runaway cart of rabid herring, and their ability to keep the average attendee from seeing any underlying chaos is the challenge these two rose up to confront.

Master Mael Eoin and Lady Triona accompanied by a band of merry fig-pluckers, did fabulous things with food, for the betterment of all. (Did you get a handpie? Did you try the Jeweled Rice?)

A further thank you to Master Marl Eoin for stepping in to Herald Court when Our Herald, Lady Ragna was trodden upon by ducks, and out Protocol Droiiii-ah Our Major Domo, Master Rowen, came down with purple spotted pentapox.

Mistress Philadelphia was an unseen force, a shark-like ripple upon the tranquil surface of the waters of the Celebration, coordinating the Door/Troll duties. If you saw her, it was either because she chose to allow you to… or it was too late for you, may the Gods keep your remains safe from rot.

Mistress Gisela and Lady Eleanora held the front lines of the Troll Desk and reservations with aplomb. Possibly also a mango. Maybe a few apples, too.

Mistress Scheherazade ran the Royal Receiving Room with Grace and Hospitality that were far above what Their Majesties might have suspected awaited them.

The A&S competition and the Brewing Competition were wrangled by the newly hitched Lord Dietrich along with Mistress Lissa Underhill.

Our newest Champion of A&S, Lady Svana Vefari, and Brewing Champion, Lady Siobhan, who both wowed the various judges with entries that were magnificent and tasty to behold, as well as being scrupulously documented.

THLord John Patrick and THLady Rosiea who, as ever, were at the event as early, if not earlier than all others, and were there to the end, working on every aspect of the Celebration to see that it would run smoothly.

THLady Alesia, Our Seneschal, who worked for the last year to keep all of these various plates spinning.

A final shout of praise goes to my Signet, THLady Màiri Crawford for wrangling scribes and enscribulating herself. Fannnnnntastic!

(Anyone left out of this list of thanks is solely the fault of Baron Muin and not due to any ill intent on his part. No matter what Bob the Skull says.)

Ever your Baron of Bhakail;
  – Muin

Seneschal’s Report – Honorable Lady Alesia de Maris of Ravenstar

Greetings!

Yule happened! There were people to see and a feast to be had. The Royals came and there was court and awards and cheering! It wasn’t quite like Yule of the past, but it was a step in the right direction.

I would also like to thank everyone who came to Yule to celebrate the season and friendship with us and who patiently waited to have their ID’s and vaccination cards checked. Thank you to everyone who helped out in some way, to those on staff, to those who shared their arts with us and to those who fed us and entertained us and gave us new beverages to try.

Thank you to Their Majesties and His Highness for coming to visit us and hold court and recognize individuals for their contributions to our society.

Pax happened! We are sad that it conflicted with Yule, but it was a great event in its own right.  A big thank you to Lady Chana who put in so much work and made us look so good. And thank you to those who stopped by and assisted her in running the table.

And as 2021 winds to a close I wish you all a happy holiday season and a peaceful New Year.

Chataleine’s Report – Lady Chana Freidl the Maker

What a successful demo at PAX Unplugged this weekend!  Despite the current pandemic, thousands of people attended the convention and I was able to teach so many of them some great Medieval games as well as a bit about our Society.  I made some strong contacts and renewed old ones from throughout the Knowne World, from the Kingdom Seneschal of Caid to former Eastern Royals.  Within a day of the convention ending, three of the new people I spoke to reached out for more information about joining the SCA, and I am confident I will hear from many more as people go through their stacks of business cards collected at the convention.

On an exciting note for some, PAX was created by the writer and illustrator of the webcomic Penny Arcade, who I got the chance to meet and speak with at leisure about the SCA.  It turns out the author, Jerry Holkins, has come to SCA events in the West Kingdom and noted our kindness and hospitality towards newcomers.  I gifted him one of the wooden game boards donated to the event as well as a 3-D printed salamander Mael Eoin gave me to hand out.

Knowing this demo was held opposite Yule was especially challenging, but I could not have accomplished anything this weekend without the kind souls that stopped by the table to sit and teach games in their own free time at PAX.  WIthout the help of Solveig, Zach, Maryna, His Excellency Aurddeilen, Genjiro, and Bidan, I would not have been able to take much needed food and bathroom breaks.  Rick Myers’ assistance with packing the car, hauling the wagon, setting up the booth, and talking up the SCA, saved my sanity, my patience, and my shoulder sockets, for which I will be forever grateful.  I am also extremely lucky to have had a NJ Renaissance Faire actress stop by the booth and volunteer her time to sit with us for a few hours each day and play chess.

It was a wonderful weekend that I wish I could have shared with the rest of you!

  • Possible Spring camping event – Alesia asked for suggestions for possible camping sites on Facebook and the list, a few suggestions were made. She will be looking into them after the first of the year. She will also be looking for campgrounds in less populated areas of the Barony.
  • Site Committee – Discussed starting a committee to look for new sites. Bryan volunteered to lead the committee, Ragna and Eleanora volunteered to be on the committee. Ragna is looking for information on St. Marks in Wynnewood as a possible event site.
  • Event Comps – There was a discussion regarding comping certain people for the feast. We will be looking into the policies of our neighbors for some guidance. Right now, the event steward makes a decision and includes the comps in the budget when sending it to the Finance Committee.

  • Yule – The day went well; the only glitch was the court ended 40 minutes early. As feast was planned for the end of court, this made the wait a bit longer than expected. The check in process worked well, thank you to everyone who worked to make every go smoothly. We ran into an issue with the stove and sink in the upstairs kitchen which made the cook’s job harder.  There was a discussion regarding the kitchen and parking issues with the site, we will start looking for a new site. There will be an online staff meeting soon to compare notes and ways to improve for the next Yule.
  • Pax – It was super fun and a lot of work. Lady Chana made some strong connections with people interested in what we do. There were thousands of people there despite the pandemic. Chana thanked the people, both SCAdian and non-SCAdian, who helped. Someone Chana met suggested that next year we do an hour-long panel and a 20-minute fighting demo.
  • Tavern – The event stewards are working on the PayPal paperwork and the menus. A preliminary event announcement will go up on the East Kingdom Event page by this weekend. A suggestion was made to let people know about event registration on Facebook, the list, and any other social media as necessary. Philadelphia has passed a vaccine mandate for catering halls and restaurants that goes into effect in January. We need to get more information, does this mandate also affect private parties in rental halls?
  • New Exchequer sought – The Exchequer is looking for a deputy or a successor. Her term is up in June 2022.
  • New Chronicler sought – Chronicler is stepping down in February 2022, looking for a successor.
