December 13, 2016 Barony Meeting

Meeting started at 8:03pm (16 people attending)

Old Business

Winter Nights

A bid was sent to the Finance Committee. Sabine gave a summary of the event.

Winter Nights is a long-standing tradition: a bardic-themed event focused on a series of entertaining challenges (in song, poetry, and spoken word) posed to the participating performers. Previously, the event has generally happened in the Concordia/Anglespur area, but last year moved further north; the plan is now to rotate it throughout the kingdom so that as many people as possible have a chance to get in on the fun — and Bhakail has been asked to host this winter. We’ll have performances happening all day, orchestrated by the current Winter Nights champion (Lord Drake Oranwood) and our own baronial bardic champion (Lord Sean O’Morain), along with games and other entertainments. While there will not be an evening feast, we expect to continue Bhakail’s custom of putting on an outstanding dayboard.

There was a vote taken to approve this event pending approval of the budge from the Finance Committee. Suba motioned to vote, Sabine seconded. 15 approved, 1 abstained.

Yule Event

More walk-ins than planned for.  Dayboard was awesome, and feast no less so. Thank-yous are in the process of being arranged.  No one got sick or injured at least in any major way.  The children looked like they were having fun making masks and painting stained glass. There were 3 musicians for the dancing.

The entries for A&S and Brewing competitions were amazing.  People were having a good time in the Rathskellar.  I don’t want to repeat anything in other reports, such as Herald’s, Exchequer’s, or relate any of the problems at the last minute, before the Post-Mortem, which has not yet been scheduled.

Tavern

is coming up. There are a few registrations already!

Polling for Baron/Baroness

There is a semi-approved ballot, pending approval from the candidates. There will be a separate photo insert. There will be a request for stamps budget, around $140.

New Business

We have received word on the dates available for Investiture, early June 3 or 17 or late August. If we choose the June date their majesties would like us to also host K&Q rattan championships, and have the bid in by Jan 1. We may petition to have all the profits stay for us, if we are willing to run K&Q Ratan.

December 2016 Baronial Reports

Seneschal

Thanks for all the support you are going to give. Due to the current moving of officers to other offices, the Canton needs a new Seneschal and Exchequer.

Exchequer

We have money.

Coronet

The last month was fairly short on events, but the baroness was able to spend a weekend with five of the local fencers, including our current rapier champion,  driving first to the Riding of Gigglewick for Northern Region Rapier Academy and then to Carolingia for Central Region Rapier Practice, where there were more classes and more fencing. The comportment and skill shown by these good gentles was and is always exemplary, and it was a joy to join them for the weekend.

Whereas we are still recovering from this year’s Yule celebration, we would like to send out a found and enthusiastic thank you to all the many people who helped make the event possible this year. We will send out a more detailed report in the coming month.

Mael Eoin plans to use the photos from Kalin on our website.

Yours in Service,

Ysmay and Mael Eoin.

Herald

Their Excellencies held a Baronial Court on December 10th at Bhakail Yule. Many awards were given out. More details next month.

There will be a brief Court at “At the Sign of the Bear and Phoenix” tavern event on January 28th, 2017.

For Barony, Bailiwick, and Canton,

Pray know I remain,

  – Rowen Cloteworthy, Salamander Pursuivant

Chronicler

A heartfelt thanks to Martyn de Halliwell for filling the post of Chronicler for the past two months, as I was unable to do so. He has also offered to be my deputy!

I am proposing that rather than sending an quarterly Salamander full of articles around, that I as chronicler could volunteer to facilitate getting articles up on our website, all tagged as the Salamander. I think this would both add interest to our website, and allow for more convenience in getting articles out, as they could be scheduled far in advance, or posted almost immediately as they are received.

It was suggested that we could have Meet the Candidate articles for the website.

Historian

Bryan is still working on things, downloading more.

Arts and Sciences

Congratulations to Lady Shoshana Gryffyth, our new baronial A&S champion, and to Jeffrey & Bethanie (sorry for the mundane names!), winners of the populace choice. Many thanks to Lord Lorenzo for his outstanding service.

Watch this space for announcements re. upcoming Roman-themed projects, crafts, etc. for Caer Adamant’s event in February — Shoshana and I are conspiring…

K&Q A&S Champions is coming soon. If you would like assistance with documentation or with feedback on projects and ideas, please feel free to let me know.

Chatelaine

The new Baronial Chatelaine checking in for her December report!

First of all, I would like to thank Lady Violet Coleson for 3 amazing, wonderful and successful years of service as Barony of Bhakail’s Chatelaine.  She has put in many hours of her own time, effort, and kindness in welcoming and acclimating newcomers to the Barony and the SCA en large.  It is locally thanks to her that our numbers have grown.  I can only hope that I will be able to follow in the shadow of her footsteps.  So thank you Lady Violet for all that you’ve done in this capacity.

In newcomer news, I’m delighted to share that we have seen some healthy interest from new people.  In the past 2 months we have received contacts from 15 people!  A few will be attending their very first event tomorrow at Bhakail’s Yule event, and others have been participating locally at our weekly activities such as Fencing, A&S, and attending our weekly Canton Social.

Knight Marshal

Last month announced Talan as a deputy. Practice goes on as normal, and filing of kingdom reports.

Combat Archers

Will start workshops in January. Will be making announcements as it approaches. Can still use Stage One for shooting out back.

Chamberlain

Stuff came back from Yule clean. There will be project dates at the shop to go through stuff and go into a new storage space.

Chancellor Minor

Youth activities were held at Yule and were well attended. And a good time was had by all. And was under budget.

In service to the Barony,

Lady Alesia de Maris

Web Minister

Your friendly local Bhakaili webminister checking in for the month of December!

It’s been a pretty quiet month, with the exception of the changing of the guard for multiple officer positions in the Barony!  With change in responsibility comes change in email access.  As such, I have arranged for the new Seneschal, Exchequer, and Chatelaine to have access to their email accounts.

I also took care of a number of admin related housekeeping items for the Website.

Look forward to a more lengthy 2016 report shortly after the new year!

Muin moved to close, Bryan seconded. Meeting ended at 9:05
