September 2017 Meeting Notes and Officer Reports
September 2017
Meeting begins at 7:40pm
OLD BUSINESS
We had sheet walls and Commons, which for a free event made a lot of money. We had a lot of newcomers stumble upon us. We had River Wars.
Lunch Like Luther: As part of the arrangement for the free rental of the German Society Library for Yule Revel 2016 and 2017, Bhakail is preparing a Lunch for the German Society on Sunday, 11/19/17 (the Sunday before Thanksgiving), of dishes which Martin Luther could have eaten 500 years ago. (Next month is the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther’s “Ninety-Five Theses” and the beginning of the Protestant Reformation.) Baroness Juliana von Altenfeld, OL, OP has generously offered to research the menu and run the kitchen, but kitchen help is needed. The German Society has also asked if we have any musicians/bards who would be interested in playing/singing some German Renaissance music during the Lunch. We do not get paid for this work (since it’s in exchange for the free Library rental), but the German Society is paying for all the food, and is doing the site clean-up. So all we’ll need to do is provide the meal and (hopefully) some period entertainment/ambiance. If you’re interested in helping with the kitchen work or music, please let me know.
Yule 2017: Calling for volunteers to help with Door Warden, Kitchen Crew, Clean-up, and more. If you are interested in learning how to prep for this event, or if you just want to help out, please let me know. Volunteers welcome for prep work in the upcoming months, and on the day of the event (Saturday, 9-Dec-17). This will be a fun, interesting event, but it’s going to take a lot of us working together to make Bhakail shine as usual!
Yule 2018: Just a reminder that no one has yet submitted an event proposal to the Council of the Exchequer for Yule 2018. The German Society is penciled in for Saturday, 12/8/18, but if the next event steward wants to use a different site, that should be decided soon before the Barony has to commit to renting German Society for next December.
Updating Zip Codes
Time to form this committee as it is now after Pennsic. Mael Eoin will run the group.
Bylaws Committee
Martyn is heading this up, but is not present today.
Claritas Demo
Claritas Classical Academy is looking for fighters, poets and musicians, and others who would be willing to do a demo on Tuesdays or Thursdays between Jan. 9 and Feb. 8 this coming year. The demo would be around lunch, between 12 noon and 3pm. If anyone is available please contact Lianor. Claritas Classical Academy is located at Proclamation Presbyterian Church, 278 S. Bryn Mawr Ave. Bryn Mawr PA 19010.
NEW BUSINESS
Tavern/Champions
Suba and Rowen are looking for bids for a late winter/early spring event for Bardic Champions. It could take over Tavern? It usually is not very long, so it may fit into Tavern nicely. Teo may be interested in running tavern. There was a suggestion to move the brewing championship to this event as well. Don’t forget Gaming Champion. Please submit a bid by next month. Judith proposes, and Suba seconds that we approve the bid pending approval from the finance committee. It was approved.
Shire Wars
Folks are going. Folks are cooking (Mael Eoin) and MoLing (Judith and Gizela). There are also newcomers helping with food. The Barony will probably provide the gear. Send allergy concerns. There will probably be some soups or stews, hand pies, and some vegetables. Simple but good. This is a camping event, and a cabin with a wood fire. Oct. 20-22
OFFICER REPORTS
Coronets
Greetings from Baron Rowen and Baroness Suba! Since our last Coronet report in July we have been very busy.
In July, We attended Novice Day in the Shire of Rusted Woodlands. It was a good day supporting the newer fighters and fencers.
At this year’s Pennsic War, Bhakail had a fun and lively encampment. There were several highlights:
We were pleased to escort Our Armored Champion, Egill Illugasson called Badhands, to the Known World Baronial Armored Champions Tourney. Egill fought well and We were proud to have him represent the Barony and received many positive reports of his prowess and his courtesy. Though he did not win, a former Bhakaili, Lady Astrid Feilan, did and we were very proud of that as well.
We also got to escort our Rapier Champion, Don Eldrich Gaiman, to the Known World Baronial Rapier Champions Tourney. Don Eldrich fought well and by his own account both learned from and taught new skills to his opponents. Don Eldrich has regularly impressed Us with his courteous support and with his prowess and his courtesy to his opponents. Though he didn’t win the day, he did win his showcase bout.
Though there was a heavy thunderstorm on middle Friday when the Bhakail Filk Night was scheduled, singing did happen after the weather died down and much joyful music was made. We were pleased to host the evening and the music gladdened our hearts.
We were also pleased to be involved with the Period Music and Games Night held in camp on Tuesday of War Week, and thank Master Mael Eoin mac Echuid and Baroness Ysmay de Lynn for setting that up. That evening We held a brief Court, giving Flames to Baron Nissim aven Darmon, Lord Yoshiatsu Takiyama, and Lady Chana Freidl the Maker for their service to the encampment. We also got to witness Mistress Lissa Underhill take Lady Aibhilin inghean Ui Phaidin as an apprentice and Master Mael Eoin take Lord Matthias von Würzburg as his protege. Later in the evening, Mistress Sabine de Kerbriant took Baroness Suba and Juliana Bird as students in the art of music.
Bhakailis and friends of Bhakail were also recognised in East Kingdom Court. On Tuesday of War Week, Don Thomas del Broc of the Tadcaster Militia was raised to the Order of Defense. On Wednesday, the Southern Region Rapier Army was awarded the Blue Tyger Legion. And on Friday, Lord Donnan Fitzgerald was elevated to the Order of Chivalry.
Post-Pennsic, We attended Bhakail Champions and Commons at the end of August. Master Mael Eoin has our thanks for running this event for us. Congratulations to Bhakail’s new Baronial Champion-at-Arms, Jarl Thorson, and our new Ladies’ Champion-at-Arms, Lord Chiba Touta Yoshitaki! Congratulations also to our new Baronial Rapier Champion, Don Owynn Greenwood, and our new Ladies’ Rapier Champion, Lady Myrun Leifsdottir! We held Court at the end of the day, giving out Baronial awards to several deserving Bhakailis, including a Harlequin to Lady Triona MacCaskey, a Company of the Flame and Salamander to Baroness Wentliana Bengrek, Pasguardes to Baron Talan Gwyllt and to Egill called Badhands, and a Flame to Master Mael Eoin. We also had the honor of holding Court on behalf of Their Majesties, giving an Award of Arms and a Silver Tyger to now Lord Egill.
The following weekend We attended River Wars in the Barony of Iron Bog. Bhakail and friends had a great little encampment at the event despite the weekend’s rain. As Baron and Baroness, We fielded teams for both the Brass Hat Rapier Tourney and the Brass Hat Armored Tourney. Unfortunately, due to the weather and the holiday weekend, many of the other Baronies did not field teams and the tourneys were cancelled, with other fighting events held in their stead. We are, however, very grateful to the combatants who agreed to fight under our banner.
Lastly, this past weekend We attended Ducal Challenge in the Barony of Settmour Swamp. It was a lovely day and We were pleased to see all the fighting, fencing, and arts & sciences on display.
We’d also like to take a moment to thank everyone who has helped us set up, tear down, and serve as retainers during the day as We attend these events. You have Our deepest gratitude. We wouldn’t be able to keep the schedule that We do without your help and support.
Waauugghh, Bhakail!
For Barony, Bailiwick, and Canton,
Pray know we remain,
– Baron Rowen and Baroness Suba
Seneschal
We made it through Pennsic. Made it through several more events. Now there are quite a few events staring us in the face. Artifacts of a Life is coming up in CT, and in October there will be Roses Tourney, and in March KW A&S Symposium for which they are seeking volunteers.
Exchequer
If there are outstanding receipts, please get them in as soon as possible, so that we can finalize our numbers and get our earnings from PayPal. Don’t hand off receipts to anyone other than the Exchequer. The council may be meeting soon about a deadline for these to be turned in because of the new PayPal process. There will be a meeting tonight to close out Investiture.
Chronicler
Thank you for getting your reports in in a timely manner, or posting them on the website.
MoAS
The baronial report for this quarter has been submitted to kingdom.
Congratulations and thanks to all the Bhakailis (and friends of Bhakail!) who taught, volunteered, and performed at Pennsic, Bhakail Champions/Commons, River War, and elsewhere. We’ve had an impressive number of people doing cool things lately.
It’s not too early to start thinking about Yule or about King’s & Queen’s A&S and Bardic! If you’d like any help starting, continuing, or documenting a project, or any feedback on your progress, please feel free to contact me.
MoL
Vivant to the new Bhakail Champions. Many acts of Chivalry and exceptional skills were observed by all at the Commons.
Many thanks to Mistress Gisela Szabo and Lady Eleanora Tylemaker for their hard work at the MOL tables
Shire War will soon be here. I hope to see many of you on the Field.
Now is the time to authorize in a new skill. Make sure your cards are current and let me know if I can be of service.
Chatelaine
We have new people. We keep finding new people. There were visitors to River War that have also come to social. Ruth has not been scared away yet. Two more emailed in from the website. New people yay!
Seneschal Ivy
Planning to run a free A&S-oriented event on Penn’s campus in 2018. More info to follow.
Seneschal Ike
Social is still going well. Slight issue with officers. Exchequer needed to move out of the Canton. They have written to Kingdom about making this an exception. Also they are working on getting into the Media Halloween parade.
Knight Marshal
There was an authorization tonight. Commons was pretty good. If there were any complaints let him know.
Constable
He still has lost and found. No one has claimed it yet. There is stuff from last Yule yet. We should put out a table at this year’s Yule with the stuff and impose a fine. Or force a quest to help at the event.
Chancellor Minor
I will be running youth activities at Yule. I will provide more information about what we will be doing when we are closer to Yule.
Chamberlain
Unto the Barony, greetings!
Unfortunately, a last minute conflict will likely prelude me from attending tonight’s meeting. Below is my report:
The Baronial gear will be moving to a new location, into space generously donated by Mistress Philadelphia. I’ll be moving the gear over slowly, so that it can be re-packaged and arranged in a more efficient manner.
Several items were brought to, and returned from Bhakail Champions & Commons. Just a reminder to any who plan to hold events in 2018, to please email me well ahead of the event to arrange for using any of the Baronial gear.
A quick reminder: When Baronial gear is being borrowed and not being transported by me, please make sure you discuss your plans to transport it to the ended site for use, as well as the intended method of return for the gear.
Finally, my term ends in June; if anyone is interested in taking over the position of Chamberlain, or would like more information, please contact me, and I’d be more than happy to discuss.
