Old Business
Waking of the Salamander
Event Steward Angela Mori reported that WotS was a nice event, with a good but small turnout. There was music, newcomers, a lot of storytelling, a birthday, and a very large dog that walked through camp. The venue was good, with some foot traffic to bring in passers-by. There have been discussions of having a similar event next year, on a different weekend with two nights of camping rather than three. Under consideration is having this be a cooking event and possibly with fighting. Potential dates for 2023 that are being tentatively explored include May 12-13 and May 19-20, which do not appear to conflict with other events. The site will accommodate up to 100 people for camping, and the pavilions will accommodate additional day trippers.
Letters of intent for Exchequer
The Senechal has not yet received any letters of intent, and will continue advertising. June 2023 is the hard deadline by which there must be a replacement.
Pennsic
Bhakail Camp Master Lady Chana Freidl the Maker reported that the Mayor put out his last Pennsic update recently to announce with much joy that Pennsic will indeed happen. Pre-registration ends on June 16th for online prepaid (which secures land for your camp) so if you have not pre-regged yet, you need to do it. Please also remember to pay your camp fees. Listen to your camp masters; they are trying to make Pennsic great.
River Wars
Mikael melrakki is the new Bhakail liaison to the planning committee. No updates on event planning to report.
Commons
An event steward is needed. In a pinch Angela Mori will act as steward but prefers that someone else steps forward. The space is already reserved.

New Business
New Kingdom rules regarding home owners and local practices
At the April 2022 SCA Board of Directors meeting, a new policy was approved on the use of property owned by SCA members for events. Alesia and Mikael have been in contact with the East Kingdom Seneschal to clarify how this policy relates to local practices. In part the new policy states:
“If the member-owned property is being used strictly for local meetings or practices, and no monetary or other consideration is being given by the SCA to the site owner, the site owner may oversee the meeting or practice if they hold a local office whose duties would normally include such oversight, such as local branch seneschal or marshal. A “local meeting or practice” cannot be advertised outside the local area, cannot appear in the kingdom newsletter or on the kingdom calendar unless the kingdom customarily lists all such local meetings or practices, and cannot be a multi-day event.”
Further clarification will be requested on how this policy may impact TW practices hosted by Mikael at his home, since technically Mikael is a regional TW officer, not a local officer.

Coronet’s Report – Baron Muin maqq Minain
To the Peoples of the Barony of Bhakail, Our Allies, and Friends;
June is now well and truly upon us, as evidenced by the sheer volume of sweat being produced domestically.
As We greatly enjoyed the Waking of the Salamander last month, I feel it is incumbent upon the Barony to continue to hold this event. It was a delightfully low key event, and We were able to both enjoy the company of well known companions, as so too did we meet new people, and welcome them into Our Company.
Our next lookout is this coming Commons event, and we are greatly anticipating the contests to be held at that time.
We are still working on a basket of favors and treats for our sister Barony to the North, L’lle du Dragon Dormant. I hope many will contribute.
In this spirit, let us now contemplate the wisdom of the Ancient Seafaring Peoples of Iceland, and one of their traditional Airs to see us through the sweat labors that lie ahead!

Seneschal’s Report – Honorable Lady Alesia de Maris of Ravenstar
The Kingdom continues to open up, the event calendar seems to get a new event listing every day. Please keep in mind the mask requirement for indoor events is still in place and it applies to pavilions and pop-ups with 3 or 4 sides at outdoor events as well.
Pennsic is happening and many of us are looking forward to attending. At this time there is still a mask mandate in Ǽthelmearc, masks must be worn indoors. Merchants can decide if masks must be worn in their booths, please be courteous and follow their requirements.
Waking of the Salamander was a very relaxed and fun event. Live music and so many stories. Really looking forward to doing it again next year.
Tonight, I step down as Seneschal. Due to the pandemic, it has been a different journey than I expected with more challenges than I ever imagined. Congratulations to my successor, I know the Barony is in good hands.

We’ve gotten eight new subscribers to the FB page this month and fully half of them are new to Bhakail. They’ve all been put in touch with Lady Chana. Information keeps flowing between the Kingdom, the Barony’s FB, and the Barony’s email list, including things like event announcements, retainers needed for Her Highness, awards received by Barony folks, and panels on A&S documentation.

Heraldic Submissions:
From the Eastern Internal Letter of Intent (ILoI) – This letter includes all new names and devices that have been submitted to the Eastern College of Heralds in the last month. It takes about two months for items to reach the next stage, the Eastern Letter of Decision.
June 2022:
— I did not see any submissions which I recognized as belonging to members or friends of the Barony.
From the Eastern Letter of Intent (LoI) – This letter reports what items will be forwarded to Laurel to be decided on and what will be returned to the submitter for more work. It takes about six more months for submissions to reach the next stage, the Laurel Letter of Acceptances and Returns.
May 2022:
— Finnólfr Hrafnsson’s new name (Finnólfr Hrafnsson) and new device (Or, a raven rising wings displayed regardant sable within a bordure parted bordurewise wavy sable and Or) has been forwarded on to Laurel.
— Meadhbh inghean Eoin’s new name (Meadhbh inghean Eoin) and new device (Sable, two wolves sejant addorsed and in base a crescent pendant argent) has been forwarded on to Laurel.
From the Laurel Letter of Acceptances and Returns (LoAR) – This letter says what items have been accepted by SCA’s College of Arms and what has been returned to the submitter unregistered.

Practices continue, although one had to be cancelled after a COVID exposure. Other than that things seems to be back on track. The technical issues with the baronial email address for rapier have been resolved.
Archery & Thrown Weapons Marshals – The Honorable Lord Mikael melrakki reporting
Practices continue on Sundays. Ellyn Grene is now an archery marshal so we should be able to have archery practices regularly through the summer.

Pennsic is coming. Check your authorizations. Authorizations must be submitted to the Kingdom MoL by June 26th to be guaranteed to have the paperwork processed by Pennsic.

I am continuing to visit events to get stories. I attended Earl Horic Memorial Sovereign and Consort’s Championship of Arms and I will be attending the demo in Dover DE. The cookbook was printed on a dot-matrix printer, the scanned is hard to read and It will take me a little longer to retype it.
Minister of Arts & Sciences – Lady Scolastica Capellaria
At the weekly socials members of the barony have worked on leatherworking, garb making, fiber arts, cooking, apothecary and participated in bardic song and dance.
Lady Angela Mori and Eleanora Tylemaker continue to host arts and science zoom meetings on Thursday evenings from 6-9pm.

Our Baronial social continues to welcome newcomers every week and we’re having a great time getting to know them! A few were able to attend the Waking of the Salamander and have other events in mind as well. Gold Key has proved helpful and plentiful, and I’m always taking donations.

Philadelphia reports that Ivy is meeting, but it is not up to full activity until Penn is fully opened.
Voting for Senechal
Maister Mael Eoin mac Echuidh was elected as the new Senechal. He thanked Alesia for her leadership in keeping Bhakail engaged and active during the past years.
